Longer Multi‑Entry Schengen Visas for Frequent Travelers
2/23/2026

European Union — The European Union is moving forward with plans to make travel across the Schengen Area easier and more convenient for frequent visitors. Central to the proposal is the introduction of longer multi‑entry visas, which could significantly reduce the need for repeated visa applications for trusted travellers.
Currently, multiple‑entry Schengen visas can be issued with a maximum validity of five years. The EU’s new strategy proposes that Member States be allowed to grant extended validity beyond five years for “trusted travellers” — individuals with a strong travel history, clean immigration records, and consistent compliance with previous visa conditions.
This change primarily benefits:
Business professionals who travel frequently for work
Tourists making repeated trips to Europe
Residents of countries with strong travel compliance records, including the Gulf region
Even with extended validity, the 90/180‑day rule will remain: visitors can still stay in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days within any 180‑day period. However, the longer visa validity simplifies travel planning and reduces the administrative burden of frequent applications.
The European Commission is expected to introduce formal legislative text in the coming months. If approved by the European Parliament and Member States, the new rules could take effect as early as 2027.
This proposal represents a significant step toward modernising the Schengen visa system, rewarding compliance, and easing travel for frequent visitors while maintaining the EU’s security standards.
