EU Pushes for Removal of Internal Border Controls Across Europe

The European Commission has called on several Schengen countries to start lifting temporary internal border controls that were introduced over the past two years. These checks were reintroduced by multiple EU states in response to concerns over migration pressures and security, but Brussels now argues they are no longer justified on a prolonged basis.

Under the Schengen rules, internal border checks are meant to be exceptional and short-term. However, countries such as Germany, France, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Slovenia, and Norway have repeatedly extended them, with some maintaining controls for close to two years. This has raised concerns that what should be temporary measures are becoming normalized.

The Commission believes conditions now allow for a gradual return to open internal borders. It points to improved EU cooperation on security, falling irregular migration at external borders, and upcoming reforms under the EU’s new asylum and migration pact as reasons why restrictions can be eased.

Despite this push, several member states remain cautious. Governments argue that ongoing migration challenges and security risks still justify maintaining checks. Some also say the measures help combat smuggling and manage irregular entry, even if they disrupt travel and trade within border regions.

The issue highlights an ongoing tension within the EU between free movement and national security. While Schengen remains a cornerstone of European integration, member states still have the legal authority to reintroduce border controls in exceptional cases, meaning the future of fully open internal borders remains uncertain.
