Brussels - Belgium’s student residence system underwent a major update following the publication of a ministerial circular in March 2026, which revoked older guidance dating back to 1998, 2002, and 2005. This reform marks a shift from a flexible, discretionary approach to a more standardized and EU-aligned framework for evaluating international student visa applications.

One of the most significant changes is the stricter financial requirement. Applicants must now demonstrate approximately €1,050 or more per month in available funds and provide proof covering the entire academic year. Compared to the earlier system, there is much less flexibility regarding sponsor documentation, bank statements, or financial inconsistencies, making financial transparency a key factor in approval decisions.

Academic evaluation has also become more rigorous. Immigration authorities now closely assess whether a student’s chosen program aligns with their previous education and future career plans. Applicants must clearly justify study gaps, program changes, and their motivation for studying in Belgium. Weak or inconsistent academic narratives may negatively affect visa approval chances.

In addition, the documentation process is now stricter, with fewer opportunities to correct incomplete applications after submission. Files must be complete, consistent, and properly verified from the beginning. Academic progress is also more closely monitored, especially for visa renewals, with requirements tied to credit completion and active enrollment status.

Overall, the 2026 reforms make Belgium’s student visa system more predictable but also more demanding. Strong financial proof, clear academic planning, and complete documentation significantly improve approval chances, while weak or inconsistent applications are more likely to be refused.
